Big sports day: Softball team sweeps, baseball team wins, golfers get fifth, tennis team finish first, and schedule updates!

first_imgSoftball team goes 6-0…Can you name the last time a Wellington varsity team has gone 6-0 in any sport? It might be awhile, but the answer at the moment would be the girls softball team.T.D. Buck’s Lady Crusaders whipped Winfield 10-0 and 10-1 on a chilly Monday at Worden to improve to 6-0 on the weather-plagued spring season.Wellington pretty much dominated throughout winning the first game on a five-inning run rule. The Dukes were led by the dynamic pitching of Shanlyn Hefley, who had seven strikeouts and allowed four hits in game one.Offensively, Wellington would bang out nine hits. It also helped that Winfield committed five errors to Wellington’s none. The first Winfield error came in the first when McKenna Oathout reached base on a bad throw. She would eventually score giving the Dukes a 1-0 lead for two innings. The Crusaders would then explode in the third with six runs off five hits. Ashley Collins, Oathout, Hefley and Ryleigh Buck all singled on. Kailey Jenkins then doubled. And with no outs, Wellington was up 7-0. Unfortunately, Winfield retired the order on the next three batters and the game continued instead of ending there on a run-rule.But Wellington would get its three extra runs in the fourth and fifth to finish this game off early. The temperatures got colder in game two. But Wellington’s bats were still hot.The Crusaders would garner 14 hits in the game.On the pitching mound, Jenkins picked up where Hefley left off and held the Vikings to one hit. Again the Vikings were plagued with errors, committing four. Wellington had two.The Crusaders second game started the same way as the first, with Oathout scoring. Then in the second, the Crusaders would get four runs on five hits. Buck, Jenkins, Hamel, Shelby Cornejo an Carlie McComb all reached home.Wellington would had three more runs into third, and a run in the fourth. Winfield scored its only run in the top of the fifth. The Crusaders will take their undefeated record to Rose Hill on Thursday. Of course, the weather may have something to say about that. Right now the only thing stopping the Dukes is Mother Nature. Game #1: Wellington 10 Winfield 0Winfield 000 00x x — 0 4 5Wellington 106 12x x — 10 9 0WP— Hefley.
