A man arrested at a sobriety checkpoint in El Monte was back in Illinois on Friday to face criminal charges in connection with a 27-year-old murder. Francisco Sandoval, who used the alias Leonel Sanchez Valencia, was extradited to Illinois on Wednesday to face two counts of homicide, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of armed violence in Chicago, according to Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner James N. Bianco. Sandoval was scheduled to be in court in Los Angeles on Friday for an extradition hearing. Court officials did not know if he had waived extradition. The extradition case was dismissed from the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Sandoval’s charges in Illinois stem from the 1978 shooting death of a 20-year-old man and the wounding of a 18-year-old woman in the Chicago area. Sandoval, 55, had been at large for 17 years and living in El Monte before he was picked up during a routine DUI checkpoint in December, authorities said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police officers ran his fingerprints and learned Sandoval had an outstanding warrant dating to 1988. Sandoval pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and was placed on three years’ summary probation, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Raymundo Sandoval, Sandoval’s older brother, said his brother ended up in El Monte about five years ago and had been working as a car salesman. “I don’t know what will happen, the law is what decides,” Raymundo Sandoval said. “I feel bad because I don’t know the reality of what’s going on.” nisha.gutierrez@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2109last_img read more
