O’Rourke enters 2020 race with appeal beyond ‘party persuasion’

first_imgKEOKUK — Surrounded by cameras, reporters and curious Iowans, former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke launched his campaign for the White House in some crowded southeast Iowa venues Thursday.Joe Fierce of Keokuk wasn’t sure how to pronounce the candidate’s first name.“All I really know about him is he was running against Ted Cruz and, for me, that’s a ‘gold seal’ right there,” Fierce told Radio Iowa.Beto O’Rourke drew national attention as he finished two-and-a-half points short of defeating the Republican Senator from Texas in 2018. Fierce was up early today to listen to O’Rourke, but he’s hoping former Vice President Joe Biden runs.“I might be kind of counter the trend on this because I know there’s a ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ vibe now, throw the bums out now. All of ’em,” Fierce said. “I think, however, that we need someone who knows how it works.”Bonnie Peevler of Keokuk said O’Rourke is “of course” on her radar as she reviews her 2020 presidential choices.“I think the character of the person matters more than the experience,” Peevler said, describing O’Rourke as “intelligent and thoughtful.”Austin Bayliss, a Trump voter in 2016, drove nearly 100 miles from Wellman to Keokuk to see O’Rourke.“It’s too early tell as far as who I’m going to caucus for,” Bayliss said, adding he intends to see every presidential candidate in person.Heather Morgan of Keokuk said O’Rourke has everything she’s looking for in a candidate.“He’s very conservative for a Democrat and I think if anybody can steal Republican votes, it’s probably going to be him,” Morgan told Radio Iowa.O’Rourke shook her hand and many others in the Lost Canvass Coffee Shop in Keokuk before climbing on a chair and promising to campaign for the vote of “every single American.”“I could care less your party persuasion, your religion, anything other than the fact that right now we are all Americans and we are all human beings and we would do anything in our power for one another, for this great country and for every generation that follows,” O’Rourke said near the end of his opening statement in Keokuk. “This is democracy.”O’Rourke also made stops in Fort Madison, Burlington and Muscatine Thursday.last_img read more

O’Shaun Connection making waves at the track

first_imgPopular owner Oneil Hinds (O’Shaun Connection) has hit the ground running at the start of the new season, thanks to four winners including the grey ITALIANO who romped the opening James B. Dawes Memorial Trophy over 1300 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday. Hinds and trainer Neive Graham teamed up for a second winner on the nine-race card when highly fancied PERSIAN BELLE (2-1) made all in the fourth race for $250,000 – $210,000) claimers over 1820 metres, winning by six lengths from PERFECT FLYER (5-2) who chased him relentlessly. The seven-year-old gelding, ITALIANO, running as the 1-4 favourite with former champion Omar Walker again in the saddle, shot past early leader AGAKHAN (2-1) leaving the half mile and breezed home by five lengths from 2-1 chance GOLDEN BULLET in a field of seven $450,000 $400,000 claiming horses. PERSIAN BELLE, on the other hand was ridden by Kerry-Gayle Robinson. Significantly, both horses were claimed, but Hinds was not perturbed. “That ‘s the nature of game, you would like to keep horses when they win and do well for the most part, but there are others out there in the claiming marketplace with an eye for an Italiano or Persian Belle and as the owner, it’s best you lose them as winners,” said Hinds who finished sixth on the list of top owners last year with 18 winners and $81 million in stakes. “I can’t complain about my numbers in 2015, but the plan is to finish higher in the standings this season even though most of my earnings will come through claimers,” added Hinds ,who owns the O&S Tack Room (horse supplies and accessories provider) located on the Caymanas Park compound.last_img read more

Public Sector Workers Assured of Lump Sum on Retirement

first_imgMinister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Hon. Horace Dalley, is assuring public sector workers, particularly security groups, that there is no need to take the option of early retirement, in order to secure pension lump sum entitlements.“The reformed pension system, to come on stream in 2016, will preserve the lump sum entitlement. This government is aware and is extremely sensitive to the fact that retirees depend on this lump sum payment to start their new lives in retirement,” Mr. Dalley said. The Minister, who has responsibility for the Public Service, was making his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on July 2.Mr. Dalley explained that with pension reform being one of the major prior actions required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to secure an agreement, the Government had started “earnestly on this mission, because we know that the present pension arrangement is unsustainable.”He further explained that as part of moving the process along, the work of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament was concluded and a report tabled and debated in the House. However, he noted, as the negotiations with the IMF progressed, and wage talks with public sector unions intensified, Cabinet decided that pension reform could not be implemented at this time, but that the pension reform process continues, with a new implementation target date of April 1, 2016.Contact: Alphea Saunderslast_img read more

AFN wants independent probe of Winnipeg police paramedics in Tina Fontaine case

first_imgAPTN National NewsThe Assembly of First Nations is calling for a full investigation into the actions of Winnipeg police and paramedics who came into contact with 15 year-old Tina Fontaine before her murder.AFN Alberta regional Chief Cameron Alexis, a former RCMP officer, said it’s “unfathomable” Fontaine managed to pass through the hands of both police and paramedics shortly before she disappeared.Fontaine’s body was pulled wrapped in plastic from the Red River on Aug. 17. Police say she was murdered.“It is my opinion that policies of the Winnipeg police service may have been breached and we call upon an independent police service or a Serious Incident Response Team to conduct a thorough internal investigation on this very serious matter,” said Alexis, who was an RCMP officer for 23 years. “A thorough investigation must commence immediately and the police officers in question may need to be released from duties.”Despite being named in a missing persons report, Fontaine was briefly detained and released by Winnipeg police officers on Aug. 8 during a spot-check. The driver of the car carrying was also detained and charged with impaired driving.Later that same day, Fontaine was found passed-out by a passerby in an alley. Paramedics treated Fontaine and took her to a city hospital where she remained for about four hours.Fontaine was then released into the care of a child care worker who didn’t know the address of her caretaker. The 15 year-old eventually escaped the custody of a child care worker and vanished. The Winnipeg Police said it was a field trainer and a trainee who came into contact with Fontaine and they have both been put on restricted duties while they undergo an internal investigation.“I am offended and hurt that we have lost another child to a system that is failing our people.  This is yet one more compelling reason for a national public commission of inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls,” said [email protected]@APTNNewslast_img read more
