Apple Will Open Up And Share AI Research

first_img Apple has always been a company that closely guards its in-house research projects. Usually, the only glimpses we see are when they file yet another patent application. Now they’re going to open things up.According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has decided to publicly release their artificial intelligence research. Their lack of willingness to share was cited last year as one of the main reasons that Apple was falling behind the pack when it came to AI.While other industry players like Facebook, Google, IBM, and Microsoft have been publishing away, Apple’s team has continued working in isolation. And not just from the outside. It’s also been reported that Apple’s AI researchers haven’t even been allowed to collaborate with other teams in Cupertino. This change in attitude shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, however, given the letter that Apple recently submitted to the NHSTA. Though the letter was about the safety of self-driving cars, director of product integrity Steve Kenner made several statements that related to artificial intelligence.AI does, after all, play a critical role in a self-driving vehicle’s systems. Speaking about crash data, Kenner said: “by sharing data, the industry will build a more comprehensive dataset than any one company could create alone.” You could apply that statement to AI research as well.Kenner also noted that “Apple looks forward to collaborating with other stakeholders,” and that the company “encourages collaboration.” One way to do that: sharing the results of in-house research.Another reason not to be surprised by the about-face: Apple’s recent hiring of prominent AI researcher Russ Salakhutdinov from Carnegie Mellon. As you’d expect from an academic, Salakhutdinov has published extensively… and he probably wouldn’t have agreed to join Apple if they didn’t plan on letting him continue.
