Alcoa Asks Judge to Block Boonville Mining Ordinance

first_imgJANUARY 26TH, 2018  BRITNEY TAYLOR INDIANA Alcoa is asking a judge to prevent the City of Boonville from trying to enforce an ordinance that blocks mining activity outside city limits. This filing seeks a ruling regarding Boonville’s restriction on a legal business activity. An expansion at the Liberty Mine is needed to provide fuel for the Warrick Power Plant, which provides all utility services to Alcoa’s Warrick Operations. The expansion plan for Liberty Mine, which has received preliminary approval from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, is not located in Boonville’s city limits or any incorporated town or city in Warrick County.Alcoa and its mining contractor conducted discussions with Boonville officials and the representatives from Save Our Homes to addres feedback from the county residents who live outside the city and closest to the mine’s expansion area.Alcoa even offered to take actions beyond what is required by increasing the 300-foot buffer zone to 800 feet and installing additional seismic monitors.Alcoa agreed to describe those actions in writing and publicly announce them at a Boonville City Council meeting, but Boonville refused to rescind its ordinance or schedule a meeting to do so.Previous StoriesNegotiations Underway for Liberty Mine Expansion – January 2018Coal Mining Controversy In Warrick County – December 2017Britney TaylorWeb ProducerMore Posts – WebsiteFollow Me:TwitterFacebook FacebookTwitterCopy LinkEmailSharelast_img read more

Going long first time, you sort of have to be in the race. He got behind and wasn’t enjoying it.“His psyche was off and he didn’t know what was going on. He didn’t get beat that far but it wasn’t a real strong race, either. He’s come back and I’m trying some different things. Mike (Smith) has worked him a couple times but he’s still not breaking that well.“He needs to get away a little bit better, but going seven eighths at least there’s more speed and it gives him a better chance. We’ve got to teach him to settle and this is the only time you can do that, because they don’t have to shoot into a turn right away.”Baffert also entered daylight debut winner Dessman in the race, which offers no Kentucky Derby qualifying points since it is a sprint. The field for the San Vicente, which goes as race eight of nine: Synthesis, Kent Desormeaux, 6-1; Coliseum, Mike Smith, 6-5; Dessman, Flavien Prat, 5-2; Sparky Ville, Joel Rosario, 4-1;and Savagery, Heriberto Figueroa, 4-1.GUTIERREZ HIRES MATT NAKATANI AS NEW AGENTTwo-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Mario Gutierrez has parted company with Tom Knust and hired Matt Nakatani as his new agent.Through 27 racing days at the Winter Meet, the 32-year-old Gutierrez had a six percent winning average with four firsts, 11 seconds and nine thirds from 64 mounts.“Mario just wanted to make a change and he hired Matt Nakatani, who’s a good kid,” Knust, anything but petulant, said Saturday morning. “I love Mario’s family and all I can do is wish him the best of luck. Most recently, we were together over two years. We were together before that for about a year but parted and got back together again.“It’s been a great ride. We won the Kentucky Derby (on Nyquist in 2016) and a Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Fillies with Champagne Room, also in 2016). We’ve had some really good success. It was a good run, and like I said, I wish him the best of luck.”Gutierrez also won the 2012 Kentucky Derby on I’ll Have Another, like Nyquist, owned by Mario’s principal patron J. Paul Reddam.SANTA ANITA’S 20 CENT SINGLE TICKET JACKPOT REMAINS UNSOLVEDFor the second day in a row Friday, there were three “live” horses going into the eighth and final race in Santa Anita’s popular 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot, and once again the elusive wager remained unsolved, as #1 Posterize (9-1), #7 Red Clem (27-1) and #3 Jack’s Reign (59-1), all failed to win and finished fourth, seventh and 10th respectively.With $82,532 in “new” money wagered yesterday, the total Rainbow Six Jackpot pool was $128,156.
