Faroe Islands 1-3 Northern Ireland: Michael O’Neill’s side on the brink of France 2016 qualification

first_img1 Gareth McAuley was the hero as his brace put Northern Ireland one win away from a place at France 2016 after beating the Faroe Islands.McAuley gave the visitors the lead in the first half before Jóan Símun Edmundsson levelled the scores at half time.Edmundsson then saw red for a second yellow card before McAuley and Kyle Lafferty scored to put the men in green on the brink of qualification.Northern Ireland started strongly and found themselves a goal ahead after only 12 minutes when McAuley craned his neck to head in Oliver Norwood’s swooping cross to settle any early nerves. Some poor defending almost let the Faroe Islands back into the game as McAuley nearly turned villain after almost slicing the ball into his own net.The hosts grew into the game as the first half wore on and were rewarded after yet more awful defending from Northern Ireland.Stuart Dallas took too many touches, dallied on the ball for too long and had his pocket picked with Edmundsson finishing from close range after a smart pass was played across the six-year box. After half time Northern Ireland looked to restore their lead as Dallas – who was at fault for the goal – fired his shot over the bar.Norwood then tried his luck as he cut in from the flank but despite the promising position, he was unable to bag his first international goal and dragged his shot wide.Edmundsson then picked up his second yellow card of the match after 65 minutes when he slid into a challenge with Norwood late when stretching for the ball leaving the referee with no option and Michael O’Neill’s side with a fantastic chance to get the three points. And it did not take long for the men in green to make the numerical advantage count as, on 71 minutes, McAuley finished for his second of the night with another header, this time from Chris Brunt’s free kick.Lafferty, who was playing in his first game of the season, got Northern Ireland’s third of the night just four minutes later after a lovely pull back from Josh Magennis. The victory means that Northern Ireland will make certain of their place at next year’s tournament with a win against Hungary on Monday.
